I have blogged previously about Jimmy Savile. On his death, I blogged about the sadness of his passing. I, at the time, shared the view of many that he was a good man who both entertained the Nation, and raised millions of pounds for charity. My second blog about him was soon after the shocking news was revealed that he was, in fact, a serial paedophile.
Three official reports into the extent of Jimmy Savile’s sexual predation were released on Friday (11th of January 2013). They reveal a man who preyed on vulnerable young people, both boys and girls, for sexual gratification. Hundreds of victims have been identified, the youngest being just 8 years old at the time. Some were physically handicapped, some were mentally handicapped. It really is shocking and disgusting.
Amongst many shocking details, the reports reveal that, in 2009, Savile was interviewed by Surrey Police, investigating allegations made against him of sexual misconduct. But apparently the investigation ended once detectives had interviewed Savile, who of course denied the allegations. The Director of Public Prosecutions has made a public apology for this and many other failings of the prosecution services in bringing Savile to justice during his lifetime. It is only in death that the shocking details of his behaviour have become known to the wider World, although I feel there can be little doubt that some people did know about his behaviour when he was still alive.
The reports also say that police forces across Britain, including London’s Metropolitan Police, and the Police forces of Surrey, Sussex and his home force of West Yorkshire failed to properly investigate complaints made by some of his victims. In some cases they apparently failed to record the allegations being made against him, in other cases the victims were even warned to stop making complaints against a “national treasure”.
To give some idea of the high-circles in which Jimmy Savile moved, I have put together this little gallery of photographs of him with Prime Ministers and Royalty. Many more photographs can be found on the web, but this illustrates that he transcended the normal circles disk jockeys move in, which is amongst rock artists.
To quote part of the Guardian article
More than 450 victims have come forward to police and the charity since October, most of whom – 73% – were abused as children.
Thirty four people, including 28 children, were raped by Savile, whose abuse spanned 1955 to 2009 and took place in schools, 13 hospitals and a hospice, and BBC television and radio studios between 1959 and 2006.
Not only is the extent of Savile’s crimes shocking, but also the extent to which the victims were let down by the people who should have been protecting them from such awful abuse. Hopefully these reports will lead to the authorities ensuring victims are not ignored in future. Sadly, evil sexual predators like Savile exist, nothing can be done about this. But, what can be done is to ensure that such behaviour is stopped at the earliest possibility. For Savile to have got away with this kind of behaviour for over 50 years is one of the most shocking facts in this case.
