In the third and final part of my blogs about the D-Day landings I am posting pictures I took of the American War Cemetery near Omaha Beach in Normandy. This was the most sobering of the various things I saw relating to the D-Day landings. Just seeing row upon row upon row of graves of young men brings home just how many thousands of people died during the fighting in Normandy; sacrificing their lives for our liberty.
Omaha Beach is an 8km long beach between Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to the west and Vierville-sur-Mer to the east. It was the site of the most ferocious fighting during the D-Day landings, and is the beach depicted in Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece “Saving Private Ryan”, a film which I highly recommend seeing. You can read far more about the landings on Omaha Beach here.
